The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, March 9, edition that Corel is extending an "olive branch" to software pirates who have been using the company's WordPerfect office software. The Globe's Simon Tuck writes that Corel unveiled an amnesty program yesterday that will allow illegal users the chance to buy a licence for the software for a suggested retail price of $29 (U.S.). In addition to a clear conscience, those who accept the amnesty offer will gain access to Corel's support services and future upgrades. Those who seek amnesty will be able to get the next upgrade for WordPerfect, scheduled to be released in about eight weeks, for the same $95 as those who have been legal users all along. For first-time users, the suggested prices is $599 (Canadian). An unnamed industry experts says the move was unusual but Corel had nothing to lose. International Data research manager John Shoesmith says Corel is probably trying to lure underground users into the fold before they switch over to Microsoft's office suite.
