I appreciate the response - there was already a link here posted by someone refuting krugman and something about the gold teeth that the russians pulled from the dead enemies. Gold had a lot of value in those days to people I assume.
I even saw a movie once with Marky Mark about three kings and saddams gold.

My father was a soldier in nam, he helped some people that gave him cigarettes and liqour, also a german pocketwatch - not gold - just old. But then he was a good ole boy redneck from alabama and probably didn't realize the gold was more valuable - he hadn't been taught that 5000 years of history made gold worth a lot - all he knew was that smokes made him feel good - liquor really made him feel good - and the german pocket watch was just a neat trinket that helped him keep time. If he was an evil soldier - why not just shoot the person and take the gold - why spare thier life if gold is all he was after?

The things most recent in history have the more dramatic effect on today no? I still have to watch hotel rwanda - but the massacres of today - in croatia and rwanda and others - is gold the only thing that saved some people? I did see blackhawk down and they did save one pilot to get a big ransom payout - did they take gold or currency? I see the towelheads in iraq cutting off peoples heads - my 2 cousins are over there now - if they have some gold in thier pocket will it save thier life if they are abducted?

I saw a movie once called lord of the flies - poor piggy was my favorite - would gold have saved him?

I am sure to those with the correct BRAINWASHING gold is very valuable - crack is to others - an old copy of X-men comic book is valuable to some too - more than gold or crack.

Its all in the mind of the person - indians used to take beads in trade for their goods - the aztecz would throw gold down wells to honor the dead - the europeans thought what FOOLS no? Those dumb people had not learned the brainwashing of gold I guess.

Fast forward to st. pete, fla 2005 - you go down into the valley of death cause you are a bad dude - and some angry guys with guns stick one in your face - would it be better to have a gold coin in your pocket? A crack rock? A wad of cash? A 45 magnum? I know many coin dealers - one of them used to carry a gold chain so that if his cash got stolen in a robbery during his trips to coin shows, he could take the chain they did not rob and go pawn it and have some money to get back home - he carries a gun now.

Gold only has the VALUE you give it, that you are TAUGHT it has, like the 600 dollar jean over the kmart special jean. If people don't take it in trade - it is worthless - when I look at human needs and emotion from the macro scale - it is worthless - people want to be happy, and fed, and entertained - gold doesn't do any of that - but whiskey, steaks and the internet do.

Gold had its time and place, it may still have some value today, but I am convinced in the future, if we are to have a nice star trek type future with 12 billion getting along on ebay - gold cannot be our future.
