Factory orders increase first time in 7 months
Capital equipment orders jump 7.1% in February
Orders for U.S.-made factory goods increased 1.8% in February, the first gain after six months of large declines, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

Excluding transportation goods, orders rose 1.6%. Excluding the 36% increase in defense goods, orders rose 0.9%.
Even with the gain in February, factory orders are down 18% in the past six months. The recession has hit the manufacturing sector hard in recent months. Consumer demand has fallen, capital spending by businesses has plunged, and export markets have dried up.

Factory orders had fallen at least 3% in each of the previous six months. January's orders were revised sharply lower to a 3.5% decline from 1.9% reported a month ago. Read the full government report.

This certainly is a peice of good news.
