Alpha runs mainstream 16 bit software, but it runs it poorly. It runs 32 bit WinNT software as well as a Pentium. DEC won't be a factor until WinNT becomes the mainstream OS, which is why they waited so long to cut prices to mainstream levels. Like AMD and Cyrix, DEC has an opportunity window with Intel at capacity.
