Right now my inputs tell me that a lot of people are going to install Linux on their desktop in 2002, and a lot of people are going to use StarOffice 6. If I'm right, Linux desktop share will reach 1-5% in 2002, and maybe reach 10% in 2004. Measured in number of new PCs and changes of OS on old PCs (Windows reinstallations not counted), I believe that Linux will break 10% in 2002 easily, and much more in 2003.

The main reason that people start to use Linux is when it gives them something Windows cannot. Right now, most people use the number of apps they can get for free as an argument. I think that the first people who will switch to Linux and StarOffice will be those, who "borrowed" Microsoft installation CDs before, but now face more product registration.

Microsoft applications will start to become luxury products for a minority of people.
