I've never seen the claim in any of several biographies that that Harding was inducted into the KKK. He advocated anti-lynching laws, repealed Wilson's prohibition on letting minorities serve in federal jobs, and advocated complete legal and educational equality of the races in a famous speech in Birmingham, AL before a shocked, segregated audience. His detractors in the Democratic Party went so far as to imply that he had African lineage- he was called "The Shadow of Blooming Grove" by many Democratic opponents, most notably his hometown enemy, Amos Kling (whose daughter ended up marrying Harding). Actually, what I credit regarding US resistance to fascism is the fact that WWI took place elsewhere. Over 100K Americans died in the war, but there was no destruction here, no massive interruption in daily life. The closest we came to fascism was, in fact, during WWI under Wilson.
