ACTV Announces Completion of First Point-Of-Presence in HyperTV Network
On-Schedule Installation is Key Step to Offering Revolutionary Interactivity Combining TV Programming with Synchronized Web Content, Online Advertising, E-Commerce & Chat
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 19, 1999-- HyperTV(TM) Alliance with The Box Music Network

Progressing as Planned

ACTV, Inc., (NASDAQ: IATV - news) today announced that installation of the first point-of-presence (POP) in its HyperTV Network has been completed. HyperTV(TM) is ACTV's patented software solution for the creation and delivery of truly interactive TV-Internet convergence programming. The state-of-the-art HyperTV POP, located at an Internet Data Center facility hosted by Exodus Communications(TM), Inc. (NASDAQ: EXDS - news), will enable ACTV to offer revolutionary interactivity combining live or pre-recorded television programming with the delivery of synchronized Web content, online advertising, e-commerce, and community chat via the Internet. ACTV expects to derive significant revenue from HyperTV software licensing fees, program hosting fees, online advertising sales, e-commerce applications, event sponsorship, and content creation fees.

ACTV has completed stress-testing for the POP, ensuring that it can consistently support up to 100,000 simultaneous users of HyperTV without crashing the system. The servers for the HyperTV POP are located at Exodus' New York facility, and will utilize Exodus' secure, high-speed and redundant network architecture to deliver its content over the Internet. The HyperTV Network is being built utilizing clustering technology, which offers ACTV scalability to rapidly increase its ability to support additional HyperTV users in increments of 100,000. Additional hardware and space at Exodus have already been secured to quickly add capacity to the HyperTV Network.

''The installation of our first POP is an important step in our plans to create a full-scale, interactive HyperTV Network. Our goal is to not only be able to support one-time, marquee TV-Internet programming events, but to provide programmers and advertisers with the ability to offer a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, 365-days-per-year convergence programming service,'' said Bruce Crowley, president of ACTV subsidiary HyperTV Networks, Inc. ''Our focus is on delivering a high quality service that offers consumers, television programmers and advertisers a far superior experience than earlier attempts at TV-Internet convergence programming.''

Earlier this summer, ACTV and The Box Music Network announced an agreement to provide HyperTV-enabled programming throughout The Box's 24-hour-a-day interactive music television programming. The two companies are currently developing exciting, interactive Web-based content for a scheduled rollout this Fall. The Box, part of MTV Networks, is well known as an interactive music television service that delivers a high concentration of teens and young adults, an ideal demographic with a propensity to be early adopters of new convergence media products and technologies. The Box Music Network reaches more than 40 million households worldwide including the U.S., Europe, and Latin America.

''HyperTV is in a period of rapid growth. As we work with additional programmers, their advertisers and retail partners, HyperTV will be a significant revenue generator for ACTV,'' said Crowley. ''We approach the convergence of television and the Internet from a very TV-centric viewpoint. We believe the Internet can be a powerful tool for television networks such as The Box to further extend their brands to the Web, while greatly enhancing the value of the traditional television experience for advertisers, sponsors and viewers,'' he concluded.

All consumers need to experience HyperTV programming is a standard television set and computer with an Internet connection. The patented HyperTV software is designed to be a browser plug-in for newer versions of either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, the most popular web browsers. Software-based, without hardware, chip or platform dependency, HyperTV can operate on any of today's principal PC operating systems. It is also fully compatible with analog or digital television and broadband delivery infrastructures. Programmers don't have to alter their existing delivery systems to begin providing their viewers with a HyperTV experience. As next generation digital set-top boxes, cable modems and other consumer devices are deployed, viewers will be able to enjoy a HyperTV programming experience with each of the elements -- video, audio, synchronized Web content and chat -- simultaneously delivered directly to their television screen or desktop.

ACTV, Inc., is a leader in interactive digital television with its proprietary ''Individualized Television'' and ''Individualized Advertising'' software and programming capabilities. The company has also pioneered TV-Internet convergence programming with its patented HyperTV(TM) software solution. ACTV offers superior, practical solutions for television programmers, advertisers, cable operators, educators, and consumers looking to leverage the emergence of digital television and the broadband delivery infrastructure.

ACTV has relationships with many of the dominant players in the Internet, television and digital technology fields, including key strategic investments from Liberty Media Group (NYSE: LMG.A - news, LMG.B - news) and General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC - news).
