Bush truthfulness questioned

Meanwhile, questions about the truthfulness of Bush's statements regarding his
relationship with Lay popped up in newspapers and on TV news programs. Bush
has said he "got to know" Lay as a result of his membership on the Governor's
Business Council, a nonpartisan Texas board to which Lay was appointed by
Democrat Ann Richards.

Lay "was a supporter of Ann Richards in my run in 1994. ... And I decided to
leave him in place just for the sake of continuity. And that's when I first got to
know Ken," Bush told reporters last week.

However, according to campaign finance records, Lay and his wife gave $37,500
to Bush during his run for governor -- three times the money that Richards
received from the Lays. In addition, Lay told a PBS interviewer last summer that
his relationship with Bush predated that campaign.

Enron and/or its employees also contributed to Bush's unsuccessful 1978
congressional run.
