In Hawaii, whites are in the minority. It's also a very liberal state. Obama would have no problem with his racial make-up growing up there. On the contrary. He looks like he'd fit in perfectly. So maybe Obama is exaggerating to create his own myth a little?

Nor would he have much of a problem being a politician in Illinois which is the only state to elect two black senators.

Where Obama will have a problem is in mainly-white purple and red states, including every single state necessary for the democrats to beat McCain in 2008. Perhaps the one exception might be Florida. But that is also the state which heavily backs Jeb Bush, so I guess it's non-white population isn't big enough to make a difference.

Obama may even have a problem in normally light blue states like Oregon, Minnesota and New Hampshire. Indeed, he could lose about 45 states against McCain, particularly if McCain were to pick Colin Powell as his running mate and destroy any advantage Obama might have amongst non-white voters.

All that said, Obama might make a compelling VP candidate for the Dems. Or just a top-notch cheerleader and fine senator.

You understand, as a democrat, I want to win. I don't care about making statements. That is why I am going out on a limb and predicting the Dem candidate in 2008 will be a white male. Because in the end, DEms are almost always pragmatic. for instance in 2004, Howard Dean would have lost 40-45 states.
