CobaltBlue, Sounds like our family tree. Great grandmother was Cherokee (family has lived within ten miles of New Echota since the 1830's) and my first English ancestor in this country came to Virginia in 1663. Some German/Irish/Scottish with ancestors who fought in every war. All my people on both sides were here before the Civil War. My Grandmother, who lived to almost 100 grew up with a house full of Confederate veterans. One of them, an aunt, was the last person around to draw a Civil War widows pension. Makes you feel old, doesn't it?
