The problem IMO is this: who actually wants peace in the ME? Bush just started an unnecessary, and roundly reviled war in the ME and is just itching to extend it to Iran.

Does Sharon look like a man who wants peace? Did Arafat look that way?

IMO there are plenty of people in the world who are in love with war and conflict. It gives them purpose, it gives them excitement and it gives them opportunity for personal profit. I don't think conflict is a failure of civilization, I think for many conflict is an end in and of itself.

Plenty of people will work hard to avoid peace and to extend conflict indefinitely. Religion and ethnicity have provided good cover for general belligerence and aggression so far, hereafter that cover may be provided by oil and other dwindling resources.
