CDMA DEPLOYMENT EFFORTS MOVE FORWARD IN WORLD'S LARGEST POTENTIAL WIRELESS MARKET - CHINA CDMA PREDICTED TO REACH 40 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS in China by 2003

HONG KONG, Feb 7, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced that cdmaOne(TM) deployment in China is rapidly moving forward with expectations to reach more than 10 million subscribers this year and 40 million by 2003. This comes on the heels of China United Telecommunications Corporation's (China Unicom) reiteration last week of the company's plans to rapidly construct a nationwide cdmaOne wireless network to be completed early this year.
"China represents an area of significant opportunity for cdmaOne operators and manufacturers, and the CDG looks forward to continuing its work with China Unicom in deploying its nationwide network," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "cdmaOne offers several advantages over other wireless standards including the ability to immediately offer wireless Internet and information services, high-quality voice and security and an economical evolution path to 3G."
Last week, CDG member companies QUALCOMM and China Unicom announced that they have signed an agreement that provides the guidelines and framework for the licensing of QUALCOMM's intellectual property for the manufacture and sale of CDMA wireless equipment by domestic Chinese manufacturers. This agreement clears a significant hurdle in bringing cdmaOne services to the Chinese market.
