I'm not sure it's possible to get a really accurate line on what the inflation rate is. From what I can tell there are a lot of different views on the subject. The data collection is an enormous task and easily manipulated with all sorts of quality, substitution, mandated cost issues, etc...

My problem with the whole thing is twofold.

One, we are making fiscal and monetary policy based on a bulls**t number that no one has a grip on.

Two, every time they change the formula it has the effect of lowering the CPI. This is something that clearly benefits the government in terms of expenditures, bracket creep tax increases, and borrowing costs.
