I've noticed that some traditional Amazon bulls at TMF and other sites didn't think the Sotherby's deal made much sense. Their reaction was like "Why is Amazon adding bricks and mortar? That makes them just like an old-line retailer that the Internet will replace with virtual real estate." I think that their dislike for the deal is because of the clash of cultures and the shift that is taking place. The Internet has broadened out from the early techno-geek adoption phase to the tragically-hip consumer phase, (I am being purposely outrageous in this characterization). The Sotherby's deal launches Amazon in the direction of tying high-end sales and experts into the efficiencies of the Intenet. I think this is by far the best deal Amazon has done - Bezo wasted hundreds of millions on some other deals that will never generate the returns needed and could have been duplicated given six months and a half-dozen good programmers. No competitor on the planet can easily duplicate the network of 2,500+ Sotherby's experts. This may rile some Internet wonks because it points out that the Internet is not the ALL IMPORTANT ingredient to ecommerce business success that they would like it to be. That is a blow to their self importance and vision. This time Bezos got it right.
