On AMD’s Mobile Plans

Very interesting! See xbitlabs.com

A quote:
"As you can see from the picture above, all the major hopes in the mobile market are pinned upon AMD’s new 0.13micron Thoroughbred core (and later Barton core as well). This core should let AMD achieve high working frequencies while the heat dissipation will remain quite low. It’s noteworthy that AMD is going to beat Intel in all the three categories in terms of processor performance. For instance, the fastest Intel processors, which will be based on 0.13micron Northwood core starting from H1’02, will be able to reach only 1.7GHz-1.8GHz by the middle of the year. At that time AMD will be offering CPUs with 2000 rating working as fast as Pentium 4 2GHz. As for the heat dissipation rates, the mobile Pentium 4 processors will not manage to prove any better than Thoroughbred: their average heat dissipation will make 25W-30W, i.e. about the same as that of the eldest mobile Thoroughbred models.

In the remaining two categories, namely with 25W and 16W heat dissipation rate, AMD’s prospects are much more promising that those of Intel. Pentium III-M CPUs on Tualatin core will reach only 1.5GHz core clock by the middle of next year, while the competing products from AMD will overcome the 1.5GHz bar in Q1-Q2 already."
