Yellow dog is a term reserved for old line Democrats. It is a Southernism and cannot be applied to Republicans of any stripe.

It comes from the old southern saying: this dog don't hunt. It seems that an old Democrat, actually the only Democrat left in town, lived in a blue blood section of town made up entirely of Republicans. He had a dog named "Yellow". That dog didn't hunt either. It got around town that the old guy who was the town's only Democrat had a Yellow dog that didn't hunt. So the Republicans started calling him a Yellow Dog Democrat.

The title stuck. Now, any old time Southerner who is still a Democrat is referred to by that classic title:

Yellow Dog Democrat (whose dogs don't hunt!)
