I view all of the current orders as trials. If you would go back and read few articles about alcatel's victory(largest order) you would find that some refer to it as trial.
As you have pointed yourself that after isdn losses telcos will not jump into anything without market research. I think we are approaching market trials rather than tech trials.
I agree with you that most likely it would last less than 40 years but I think that there are still plenty of time left though.
I would think that mass production of chips is more important than mass production of modems themselfs since it would result in a low cost modems and probably lead to mass production of modems themselfs. And probably amati stand to benefit from that most.
