Andrew, That was one form of the usage and my favorite. Yellow Dog is also used to indicate a labor contract where workers have to agree not to join a union in order to get a job, and that's all Republican. And there is the original usage, which refers to a native American chief who sold out his own people to kissy-face with Washington, at least according to some.
