But from what I understand Al Gore is saying, there is an eminent tipping point where the damage becomes irreversable. That doesn't necessarily mean life ends immediately after reaching the tipping point.

I think the concept of lag time is starting to register. There's a certain amount of progress that needs to be made before we reach the tipping point. If the tipping point really is imminent, we are doomed even though the catastrophe won't occur until some time later.
