John, depends on your goals. Some of the MIPS clones that are out there will outperform a StrongArm, but where the StrongArm excels is when you need the most computational power for the least battery power. Now that may change, there is a startup that has much of the original StrongArm team (Intel had real problems hanging on to those digital engineers, wonder why?) that recently announced a MIPS clone at 500MHz that may take that crown away from the StrongArm.

In general, the MIPs clones that have power consumption in the StrongArm range, NEC has one that is in many PDAs, don't have the CPU power, and the ones that outperform the StrongArm don't have low power consumption.

And even when the MIPS machines can match, or exceed, the StrongArm in milliwatts per MIP, the code for a MIPS tend to be bulkier. Handhelds are a real complex balancing act between all components, the CPU is just one of them.

I personally cannot wait until Motorola gets their little micro-fuel cell working. That will help solve the battery problem.
