Google's volatile shares, which more than doubled last year, have fallen more than $60 this week. This week's decline has erased more than $17 billion in market capitalization from the search giant. In late-afternoon trading, shares were down $34.60, or 7.9%, to $401.85.

(Google is due to post earnings Jan. 31. Analysts are forecasting earnings per share of $1.76 on sales of $1.29 billion, according to Thomson Financial.)
