Hi all; SimmTester reports P4 flops:

Retail sales of Pentium 4 discouraging
DocMemory 1/4/01
Intel latest and fastest Pentium 4 processor flopped in its debut in U.S. retail stores, according to preliminary sales figures. For December, the processor's first full month on the market, the 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz Pentium 4 appeared in only about 1 percent of all PCs sold at U.S. retail, according to data compiled by the market research firm PC Data.

Direct-order sales were not included in the figures. By comparison, the Pentium III captured 8 percent of unit sales in its first full month after its introduction in 1999, according to the research firm.

Market analyst said the root problem is the lousy PC demand in the recent quarter. Other reasons for the lower than expected sales of Pentium 4 are consumers don’t need high performance chip for most applications, and PC OEMs are reluctant to offer systems based on Rambus memory which is packaged along with Pentium 4, according to the analyst.

On top of that, the higher cost due to the super big die size which is more than twice as large as a 1GHz Pentium III is a turn off as well. The Pentium 4 also fails to deliver significant performance advantages over its competitors, AMD’s Athlon chip. Thus, there is really no compelling need for consumers to switch over now, the analyst said.
