Just stick "fuel economy standards China" into Google and you'll get lots of refs :) I first got onto this from someone doing a PhD at Harvard about the Chinese car industry when she gave a presentation at a conference in 2003 and newspaper reports and nobody has contradicted me citing this since then :P

Of course local pollution emissions standards are weaker than the US - I think they adopted the 1992 EU standard.
