The interesting thing about the story is that the setting is WWI but it was written as an anti-war novel during WWII and produced as an anti-war moving during VietNam. There is also a plagerism claim about some Russian work.

Kind of like the tv series MASH, with a setting of war with Korea but in reality it was about VietNam.
