The market for WCDMA chips rose 25 percent to $1.76 billion in 2006, iSuppli reported.

Texas Instruments' share of the market fell to 33 percent in 2006 from 42 percent the previous year, El Segundo, California-based iSuppli said. Qualcomm's share of the chips climbed to 31 percent from 26 percent.

Texas Instruments' sales of WCDMA chips fell 3 percent to $575 million last year. Qualcomm increased its sales of the chips 48 percent to $539 million.

Freescale Semiconductor Inc. climbed to third place, with 15 percent of the market. Its sales rose 90 percent to $258 million. NEC Electronics Corp., dropping to fourth place from third, had 7.8 percent of sales.
