I agree with you, Scumbria, a VIA/Cyrix merger is not bad for AMD.
1. AMD does not have the means to compete in the low-end market because it requires CPU/chipset/graphics integration and AMD has no graphics experience. As you said, I expect AMD to complete their exit from the consumer business post haste.
2. VIA/Cyrix will become non-dependent on Intel
3. VIA/Cyrix will force Intel to subsidize their low end chips, taking away profits needed for a competitor to the Athlon.
4. VIA/Cyrix will continue to make chipsets for AMD CPU's simply because they can make money doing so, and Intel has no way to pressure them NOT to do so.
5. VIA/Cyrix may take away a key profit center for Intel -- chipsets
6. Motherboard makers will not be as easily swayed by anti-Super7 and anti-SlotA pressure from Intel since they can get their chipsets from VIA/Cyrix.
7. A non-RAMBUS alternative for CuLaterMine will tend to delay RAMBUS market share, keeping the all-Intel solution (CPU and chipset) expensive.
