Report: MetLife in Talks to Buy Travelers Life & Annuity in Deal That Could Be Worth $12 Billion

NEW YORK (AP) -- MetLife Inc. is in talks to acquire Citigroup Inc.'s Travelers Life & Annuity Co. in a deal that could be worth as much as $12 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
An announcement could be expected in a matter of days, the newspaper said, citing sources close to the matter.

Representatives for MetLife and Citigroup did not return requests for comment from the Journal on Sunday.

The move would continue a trend of Citigroup selling off several of its noncore businesses. In November, the company sold a truck-leasing operation to General Electric Co., for $4.4 billion. It also sold its European vendor-finance leasing operation for CIT Group Inc.

Citigroup, the world's largest financial institution, was created through the 1998 merger of Citibank and Travelers Group.
