ALL: This quarter's numbers should follow the other players in the wireless (VOXX/BAM, etc.) and be (to quote IJ) "very good". Looking forward, this clip shows the potential out there. Would love to hear a China news bite in the CC.

CHINA: MOBILE'S HOME: According to the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry, the number of mobile phone users in China reached 43 million at the end of 1999,up 139 percent from the end of 1998. The Chinese government has made clear its intention to rely on mobile rather than fixed-line networks to increase telecom penetration in China's population of 1.3 billion. But dont count wired phones out. They still supply valuable service!

This just in from Reuters: Despite the hype, it doesn't look as if wireless phones are going to supplant wireline any time soon. Old-style POTS is just too useful in critical situations. Ask two Turkish brothers, who would be dead if not for wireline.
True, when an auto break-down left them surrounded by hungry wolves in the eastern province of Agri, they used their mobile phone to summon armed police. But until those police arrived, the brothers avoided becoming lupine Alpo only by scrambling up a telephone pole and perching like crows.

We expect ILECs to offer this as an optional service. Look for "outside perching" next to "inside wiring" on your next bill.
