Microsoft sinks in after-hours

NEW YORK, July 17 (Reuter) - Shares in Microsoft Corp sank by more than three points after the bell on Thursday, deflated by fourth quarter earnings that came in just beneath analysts' expectations, dealers said.

The company posted earnings for the quarter ended June 30 of $0.80 per share, a penny above First Call estimates of $0.79 but below ``whisper numbers'' that ran as much as $0.10 to $0.13 ahead of the First Call consensus.

Traders said Microsoft stock traded at 146 after the bell, down from an unofficial close of 149-7/16. The year high is 149-8/16.

Also down in after-hours trade was Sun Microsystems Inc (SUNW), which traded at 44-3/4, from an unofficial close of 46-1/8. The company, which supplies computer workstations and networking software, also posted fourth quarter results late Thursday, reporting share earnings of $0.61 per share. Analysts were expecting $0.58 per share.

Komag Inc (KMAG), meanwhile, recorded second quarter earnings of $0.22 per share, a penny under expectations. Shares in the company's stock fell to 18-1/4 from an unofficial close of 19-3/32.
