I would recommend not postponing any trips to that area. I took two of my kids to DC in early August and we all had a great time, and in these times they really seemed to be more interested in the memorials and monuments and where the President is and things like that. We also drove by the Pentagon, which has been almost completely rebuilt, though you can see where the new part is from a slight difference in color on the facade.

I think it is very important to teach children what our country's ideals are (even if admittedly they are imperfectly met many times). Even with its imperfections, the world is IMO a far, far better place because of this country's ideals than it would be without them. And I think our children need to take an interest in that history, with its imperfections and its great moments and people, so they share in the sense of pride and responsibility that most Americans feel. Taking them to Washington and teaching them about that history is one important way to do that.
