MOSCOW, June 16 (Itar-Tass) -- The State Duma has shown interest in President Vladimir Putin’s idea to set up a gas joint venture with Iran.

“The State Duma welcomes the idea to set up a joint venture for the development of Russian and Iranian gas fields,” Vice-Speaker Vladimir Pekhtin told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“This step will broaden an access to markets of third countries and contribute to the international energy security,” he said. “The global energy security is a priority. There is no doubt that the international community is interested in stable deliveries of energy resources for the provision of worthy living standards.”

Russia’s participation in the construction of trunk pipelines from Iranian gas fields to Pakistan and India will bring orders for national metallurgical, pipe and machine building plants, said Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Industries, Construction and High Technologies Martin Shakkum.

A joint venture with Iran will be useful for both countries and the international community, said Chairman of the State Committee on Economic Policy, Enterprise and Tourism Valery Draganov. “This is a step in fulfillment of the Russian policy of diversification of markets open to international cooperation and competition,” he said.
