I am afraid you are confused. Leonard did not expose Sammy as a fraud. The determination was made that Sammy's condition was psychological, not physical, and therefore that the insurance didn't cover it, that is all. He remained at home, and was only locked up because he was helpless after his wife died. Leonard would be locked up, not for homicide, but for his condition, no longer having a close relative to care for him.
