You have two different people with two different accounts, correct?
How does the stock get transferred from one account
to another without making it a legitimit sale?

A journal entry just doesn't seem right to me somehow.

The company must be notified as to who the new shareholder is don't they?

I am having trouble understanding how stock in a public company can be transfered around without any public record.

It may be different with short sales, I am not familiar with them, other than what some of the simple parts are.

The margin requirements can be resolved as far as I know between the company and the customer.
That isn't made public, generaly..I don't think.
So whatever they worked out as far as who is sweating bullets or not, I doubt anybody will ever know.
