Matsushita plans second fab to expand PDP production By Yoshiko Hara EE Times (05/23/02 16:29 p.m. EST) siliconstrategies.com TOKYO — Anticipating worldwide demand of four million plasma display panels per year, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. and joint venture partner Toray Industries Inc. will spend about $484 million to build a second PDP fabrication facility in Osaka, Japan, lifting their annual production capacity to 1.5 million units. The new plant will handle substrates large enough to bring volume production of 60-inch panels to the venture. . "Including [the second plant's] output, we aim at more than 30 percent share in the world PDP market," said Ken Morita, president of Matsushita Plasma Display Panel Co. Ltd. The world market for PDPs was 300,000 units for the fiscal year ended in March, but will grow to about 700,000 units in the current fiscal year, according to Matsushita estimates. Matsushita said it sold 75,000 units in last fiscal year and intends to sell 210,000 units this year.
