Jim:

I am far from an expert in this field. I have self-educated myself over the past few months after buying my home & discovering that my Internet connection basically sucked. I strongly suggest you begin to follow the thread entitled "Last Mile Technologies." They have some very learned individuals over there, especially Frank Coluccio.

DSL Progress

DSL is moving along. The principal reason is increasing competition from the cablecos that are delivering high-speed Internet access via HFC (hybrid fiber-optic/coaxial) lines. The telcos ONLY respond to competition.

Location

Situated in a rural area does not necessarily mean that you will not be able to get DSL. The critical question is whether there is development in the area that will lead to investment by the local telco to build a CO in the area, or install a fiber-optic line to your area.

Gotta go. Will continue later
