Tsunamis are serious theats but there is no way to know when one of large size will happen either from an earthquake or a meteor hitting the ocean. At least Manhattan has Long Island sheltering it to the East which should take the brunt of any large Tsunamis. Yeah there would be water sloshing around New York Harbour but fairly moderate compared to what would happen on the South Shore of LI.

Big Tsunamis have hit Sydney in the last thousand years, going right over the Sydney heads. Again the city itself would suffer flooding but not the direct hit. But Manly, Bondi etc. better watch out!
