Nortel, Norweb say breakthrough to boost Internet Reuters Story - October 08, 1997 04:49 %GB %CA %ELC %TEL NTL.TO UU.L V%REUTER P%RTR LONDON, Oct 8 (Reuter) - Canada's Northern Telecom (Nortel) and Britain's Norweb Communications on Wednesday announced a "technology breakthrough" which would allow data to be sent over electricity power lines into the home. They said the advance had the potential to open up a new wave of demand for Internet services in the home. It would allow data to be transferred up to 10 times faster than ISDN, currently the fastest generally available system for domestic users. The technology, which enables electricity companies to convert their power infrastructures into information access networks, will be marked in Europe and the Asia Pacific region, the companies said. It was developed at Nortel's main European research centre in the English town of Harlow. Trials on Norweb Communications' network have been completed successfully and the technology is now ready to be deployed in volume. The partners said it would allow electricity companies to provide a service that solves the three big problems facing domestic Internet take-up -- access to homes, data transmission rates and capital cost. "As one of the first practical low cost answers to the problem of high speed access to the Internet, this new technology will unleash the next wave of net growth," said Peter Dudley, a vice-president of Nortel. -- London newsroom +44 171 542 7717
