Ericsson reviewing tieup with China's ZTE - report

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Ericsson is reviewing its tieup with China's ZTE Corp prior to thelaunch of TD-SCDMA wireless services, the South China Morning Post reported, citing the Swedish firm's Greater China president Mats Olsson.

Ericsson (nasdaq: ERIC - news - people ) is ZTE's partner in developing technology compliant with the Chinese standard for 3G mobile phones. TD-SCDMA is expected to compete with Europe's WCDMA and US-developed CDMA 2000 with the launch of third-generation mobile services.

'We are looking to enhance our TD-SCDMA offering and future strategy on the standard,' the Olsson was quoted as saying as saying.

That would involve either 'continuing our partnership with ZTE but in a different way, or going our own way if we have the opportunity,' Olsson added

An official with Nokia says, the world's top cellphone maker expects to start selling phones for China's 3G technology TD-SCDMA in the first half of next year when the network is up and running.

With a potential 10 billion U.S. dollars of network equipment orders in the balance global players such as Nokia Siemens Networks, Motorola, Ericsson and Nortel Networks have jumped onto TD-SCDMA.
