PricewaterhouseCoopers And VeriSign Join Forces To Speed Virtual Private Network (VPN) Deployment

Planned VPN Center of Excellence Demonstrates Check Point, IRE, Network Associates, Network Alchemy, TimeStep, and VeriSign Interoperability

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF., July 12, 1999 - VeriSign, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRSN), the world's leading provider of Internet trust services, today announced plans to participate in PricewaterhouseCoopers' VPN Center of Excellence opening later this summer. PricewaterhouseCoopers will provide a lab - accessible from the Internet - made up of participating vendors' VPN products and VeriSign OnSite and Go Secure! Services. Designed for enterprises deploying secure VPNs, the Center will speed the deployment of VPNs by making it quick and easy for users to demonstrate a proof-of-concept among various VPN applications including those from Check Point, IRE, Network Associates, Network Alchemy, and TimeStep.

The lab takes the guess work and complexity out of evaluating VPNs before deploying them. Specifically, PricewaterhouseCoopers will provide a lab and host "sensitive corporate data" for a fictitious corporation. Using the participating applications, enterprises can remotely connect to a VPN and access data through an authenticated and secure VPN tunnel. With VeriSign's added participation, enterprises will be able to create a prototype public key infrastructure (PKI) to issue and manage IPSec digital certificates using VeriSign's managed services approach.

According to Infonetics Research June 1999 VPN study, VPN deployments will grow from $2.5B to $32B by the year 2001. "We are happy that VeriSign is providing its leading managed PKI services to show enterprises how easy it is to set up and deploy a scalable VPN for remote user and site-to-site access." said Bruce Murphy, partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers and leader of its Technology Risk Services practice for the Americas.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers VPN Center of Excellence, physically headquartered in St. Louis, Mo, provides customers with first hand experience in VPN vendor products before they choose to deploy a solution. VeriSign is providing VeriSign OnSite Test Drive to allow strong authentication between the remote clients and each device on the VPN. VeriSign OnSite, combined with the company's new revolutionary Go Secure! Services are designed to facilitate enterprise-wide digital certificate deployment for a variety of e-commerce applications, serving millions of users within days. VeriSign's Go Secure! Services enable organizations of any size to rapidly deploy digital certificate-based authentication, privacy and non-alterable digital signatures in both new and existing applications.

"PricewaterhouseCoopers is leading the way in providing the tools to help enterprises build comprehensive security solutions for secure extranets, intranets and e-commerce applications using leading VPN applications and VeriSign's managed services approach," said Richard Yanowitch, executive vice president for VeriSign. "This lab, combined with our new Go Secure! Services, will help our customers greatly accelerate the deployment of secure VPNs."

With the launch of this Center, enterprises will be able to see exactly how products work in a network configuration without investing time and resources to set up servers, gateways, network infrastructure, and telecommunications lines needed to establish a VPN for site to site or remote access. Enterprises will also be able to access VPN implementation services from PricewaterhouseCoopers including design samples, implementation guidelines, and project plans.

Participating vendors' VPN products included in the lab provide all the necessary components to set up a VPN for remote and site-to-site access:

Check Point: VPN-1 4.1 VPN gateway and SecuRemote 4.1 remote access client
IRE: SafeNet/ SoftPK remote access client
Network Associates: Gauntlet-VPN gateway and PGP remote access client
Network Alchemy: VPN gateway
TimeStep: VPN gateway and remote access client
