I think standards are helpful for teachers, if they tell teachers what to focus on. There are many things we could teach. I think it is useful to teach all students certain basic things, if only to give them a common background. All students in Freshman classes in California read Romeo and Juliet. That is, I think, a good thing. All students are supposed to be exposed to the major essay types, literary analysis, public speaking and writing assignments related to employment. Rigid application of standards is silly, but having a few strikes me as worthy. Moderation is the key, as it is with most things.
