I agree 100% that all of those tax subsidies should be cut off right now. In fact, considering the sorry state of our federal budget, I don't see how they can be justified.
Where, for the most part, I agree with you on the relative importance of the issues, I think that it is important for the republicans to be looking at how to win the next election(s). Hell, 6 years ago Pelosi was so busy planning on how to get Democrats in office that she couldn't be bothered to pay attention to CIA briefings.
So yes, republicans should be confronting, but they should also be looking for every percentage point of the population that they can swing over to a republican vote. And if the percentage of homosexuals is around 10% of the population and the republicans could swing 1% or 2% of the gays to vote for them by not restricting same sex domestic partnerships, I think it would be worth it. Again, I'm all for the Government removing the word "marriage" from the legal terminology for hetero or homo couplings.
And I do think that the importance of the right to be legally recognized as a couple is pretty significant. The acid test for this would be, if it isn't really that important, then the heterosexual population shouldn't mind if it is taken away from them.
And I guess the abortion issue, especially as grusum has stated it as an individual sovereignty issue, is pretty key liberty as well.
Because I am never going to be in a same sex marriage nor need to deal with abortions, doesn't mean that the issues are not important to someone else. |
