Creativity a bit overrated, IMO. I count my blessings that my sprouts spent most of their HS years in Tokyo (in an Amer school). Lot to be said for universally accepted (and expected) social norms.

FWIW, I have close acquaintances in Singapore -- one a top U.S. tech exec (he and spouse very conservative), the other a faculty member at Singapore American School (whole family liberal to the max). These very different people, who have lived in Singapore for several years, agree completely that some curbs on selfishness are well worth the result. BTW, the teacher is of the strong opinion that the little angels who were caned were more than deserving.
