Tim;

But most of the spending isn't "paying for them anyway",

True, so then you suggest we send them all to sit home and collect unemployment and the rest of the never ending goodies and the hoards of people becomes so huge that as a voting block those who are working are screwed!

I tend to agree with Friedman on this that "there is nothing so permanent as a temporary government program".

That's up to us. I'm not suggesting we give people lush great paying jobs in a socialistic enterprises - far from that. The best way to do this is to have private companies do the work.

But if we do have to put people to work along the lines of the CCC. Are you familiar with that program under Roosevelt during that last depression? Well in any case, those people were paid very very little - almost slaves in a free society. But they had work and so didn't revert to crime. We still benefit from many of the things the CCC did what some 80 years ago! Mostly young kids that just couldn't find work and had parents so broke in the depression they couldn't feed them. Sure better to do this than let them become gangs in the streets it seems to me.

Tim, you make the choice - have some compassion for those less fortunate than you or get your gun and board up your house if things get bad enough. In my home town things are so bad that they had to cut the sheriffs budget. The commissioners solution - there is no bounty on criminals, defend yourselves. I don't want to live in a lawless society because the economy is so bad - I'm willing to try just about anything else.
