I once bought a cheap 14.4 modem and literally wasted a couple of days trying to fix the modem strings to make it work with AOL and CompuServe. It was a maddening experience and it never worked right despite my hours on the phone with tech support. I found out later that the modem used the Rockwell protocol. In contrast, the usr Sportster I bought later was a breeze to set up and run.
