As for the examples you give of dealing with a burglar, not sure where you live, but in the U.S. you may fight a burglar on your own property, if you've a mind to, but once he's left your premises, better call the cops, and let them deal with it. I think it's legally ok to chase a burglar down a public street, but I think you would have a serious legal problem if you broke into the burglar's house to get your stuff back. Why didn't you mention reporting the crime to the police?
