Panja Up -2-: Co. Is In Powerful Trade Consortium
By KATE HUTCHISON

NEW YORK -- Institutional investors helped drive up Panja Inc.'s (PNJA) stock price Friday, as enthusiasm grows over Panja's participation in the technology industry's drive to develop a new generation of interconnected "smart" home appliances and consumer gadgets.

Shares of Dallas-based Panja, formerly AMX Corp., fetched as much as 19 earlier in Friday's trading session - a 12% premium to Thursday, when the stock closed up 5.5% at 16 7/8. More than 416,000 shares changed hands, compared with average volume of 91,000 shares.

Panja develops technology that links people to Internet content through home appliances as well as through their personal computers - a theme that's grabbed headlines in recent days.

Late Thursday, General Electric Co. (GE) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) announced they're teaming up to develop "technology solutions and standards" for interconnecting home appliances and other consumer devices.

The agreement vaulted GE into the Universal Plug and Play Forum - a technology industry consortium launched by Microsoft last year that's developing ways to allow personal computers and cellular phones communicate with appliances - such as refrigerators and garage-door openers - using Internet-based standards over a variety of media, including household telephone wiring, Ethernet or wireless systems.

Panja is a member of the consortium as well.
