Hmmmm. You are right, it is not a good sign. I recall in early 1992 visiting a shopping mall in San Diego with my wife who was my fiance then. The lot was empty. The stores were empty. You could hear the Muzak they play in malls wherever you went. There were normally one or two sales people at the most visible in any store. No one was buying anything. Just dead silence. Of course, California was then experiencing a grinding recession and the loss of 2M in native US born population.
