With all due respect to Heinz (and with acknowledging that Kunstler is on occassion errrr, hyperbolic) it's worth remembering that there is "massive state intervention" in keeping fuel consumption high in the US right now. As in subsidizing end users by not having them pay their fair share for the infrastructure required to maintain the suburban way of life. As in subsidizing pollution and it's effects on us all. As in paying trillion dollar sums for military exercises to keep the oil flowing briskly and propping up middle eastern dictatorships who sit on oil we "need". Kunstlers "solutions" may be unrealistic, but the current arrangements will not continue, and civic planning (and yes, economic planning) will be needed to transition out of it peacefully. Europe and Austria will be somewhat less adversely affected in that they never let their cities revolve entirely around the suburban/automobile model. He needs to live in Phoenix, LA, or Atlanta for a few weeks and he just might change his view on some of this....
