Hello Allen Benn; Re: Lucent "Inferno" RTOS
I just saw a press release from Lucent Technologies, announcing their
Inferno RTOS. Inferno targets the information appliance market.
Have you heard anything about this product?

A quick summary of the Inferno release:
- occupies 1 megbyte.
- runs on Hitachi 6501.t SH3, DEC StrongArm, Intel 386 and up,
Silicon Graphics MIPS, Motorola 68030 and PowerPC & Sun SPARC
- works with Windows NT and UNIX OS
- application software for speech and audio, and open database
connectivity for Informix, Microsoft, Sybase and Oracle DBs.
- developer licenses cost $25 with discounts as low as $5 for large-
volume applications. Lucent thinks this is at the middle to low-end
of competitors' price points.
- Inferno is available now; free eval. copy at Lucent website.
- Inferno will be incorporated into all the dat network hardware and
software products Lucent sells.
- Lucent expects to announce 20 customers later this month.

Press release also mentions Wind River's Tornado and a similar
product named Chorus (from France) as competitors.

I would be interested in hearing what others think about this Lucent
announcement.

Frank

We can be glad that Wind River targets diverse markets.
Would still expect a fairly large customer base among Lucent
competitors.
