Speaking of AOL's placing its cards on the ignorance/stupidity of its customers...

As goes the usual case, AOL was the first to interact with my virgin modem. I used almost exclusively (was dependent upon) the AOL area--because "the Web was much too slow." It was only later, upon subscribing to an ISP, that I learnt that the Web is much too slow WHEN accessed through AOL.

That AOL is an extremely poor means to access the Web is well known by those with ISP experience. On the other hand, this is probably not too widely known yet amongst the virgin-modem crowd. AOL must be hoping that most of its Dummies (tm) will not recognize that the company chosen to access the Web makes a crucial difference in the experience, but will just say, "Oh gee, that must be what the Internet is like then."

I hope AOL is wrong. I hope it will be possible for me to retain a little faith in the ability of people to learn.
